Roanoke

| The Roanoke is fishing well for
shad, today at least. I caught maybe 50 or more from 11:30 to 3
today, but it is a little tricky for the best luck. Smallish pink
as last year works the best I think (with some modifications). Long
stretches, I would have fish or strikes 8-10 casts in a row. You
need a sinking line either 250 or so or 10 feet of T14. Stripping very
fast works the best by far. Much better with full sun. With clouds
the hits get much less. Same general approaches as last year. |

Tuckaseegee
River |

| Fished the DH stretch of the Tuckaseegee
just outside of Dillsboro on April 13 and 14. Weather was warm,
water clear and a decent hatch late in the day on the 13th. Caught
quite a few browns and bows. Woke up Saturday and the river was
up a foot, flow was up as well. Wading was tough but still managed
to catch and release 8 browns and bows. Sunday morning the river
was still up but muddy and wading was dangerous. Decided to call
it a weekend. Stayed a Carols Cabins right on the river. Great trip
but needs to be a long weekend with the five hour drive. |

Haw River |

| The white bass are in the Haw.
I fished out of the Robeson Creek Canoe Access yesterday (before
the water rises again ...). Water temp was 64 degrees and the flow
was just under 600 cfs. The white bass seemed to want a smaller
pattern and hit on a #8 tan/white Clouser and a #10 ginger CrawFry
(as the name suggests, this is a weighted small crayfish pattern
...). I also got several largemouth on these patterns (and a bunch
of bream ...). Noticeable by their absence were the crappie.

| The shad are in at Weldon. The
run is still in its early phases and the numbers should increase
over the next couple of weeks. In fishing with Pipes, Chainsaw,
and JCap last Sunday, the usual assortment of flies, i.e. gold spoons,
shad flies in chartreuse/pink, pink/orange, and orange/red etc.
Several fish also took a 3" size 4 olive/yellow/orange craft fur
Hollow Fleye.
Check the USGS Web page for the Roanoke downstream of the Roanoke
Rapids Dam for flows before you go and setup accordingly. |

Clearwater Lake |
Dave

| Clearwater continues to fish well.
It got a bit cool and blustery late last Sunday, 1/28. The fish
continued biting to the very end. There was some major fish activity
in the slough for the first time in about a month. Water temp was
44 degrees. Fish hit everything from size 6 Purple Wooly Buggers
to some size 22 - 26 midges. They seemed to want it deep and slow
regardless of the specific flies. |

| I fished Clearwater with my Dad
yesterday, 1/24, and we had a tremendous day. Wooly Buggers, a Red
Ass, and a John Martyn Egg pattern worked caught most of my fish.
Dad used a couple of Puddin's creations to catch most of his fish.
One observation of interest: Sink rate is important. |

Mitchell River |
Dave
Maeda |
| I fished the DH stretch of the
Mitchell on Wednesday 1/3. Water has been mostly over 200 cfs the
last couple of weeks and I suspect this may have to do with the
Mitchell fishing as tough as it has. I managed to get a couple of
rainbows just after 2:00 pm on a black #14 Wooly Bugger where Grover
Cockerham meets the stream. This was after the water had fallen
about 6" over the course of the day. |
