Up to now, we have been focused on forming the casting loop, loop control, and the casting arc. Ultimately, our objective is to achieve greater distances accurately.
To do so, we must remain in control of the five elements that govern our casting stroke:
Eliminate Slack Line: Keep your rod tip low or in the water to eliminate all slack in a straight line before beginning the cast.
Variable Casting Arc: The arc and casting plane change as distance increases (short cast = narrow arc; medium-distance cast = medium arc; long-distance cast = longer arc).
Timing: Short cast = short pause to allow the line to straighten; medium cast = medium pause to allow the line to straighten; longer cast = longer pause to allow the line to straighten before changing direction to exactly the opposite direction to begin #4.
Proper Application of Power: Gradual acceleration of the rod ending in an abrupt stop to form the loop. Start the cast just before the line straightens out behind you (or in front if making a false cast). More on this in the future.
Straight-Line Path of the Rod Tip: The fly line follows the rod tip.
While all of these elements make up a cast, each plays an important role. A straight-line path is the key element of loop control to achieve longer casting distances.
Tracking is the path our elbow, rod hand, and rod tip travel during the casting stroke. Tracking takes place on more than one plane. On a short cast, the path travels upward on the backcast to the forward cast in a straight-line path 180 degrees opposite from one another.
Lefty would use the analogy of keeping your elbow on a shelf. Not only is the elbow on a single plane, but the wrist also cannot twist or contort to alter the rod tip into a different path or direction. Tracking is like keeping all the moving parts—the elbow, rod hand, and rod tip—aligned along the exact same line.
Looking at the casting stroke from above the caster, the fly line again needs to travel in a straight-line path. The path of the rod tip cannot curve around the body of the caster. That results in a curved path, not a straight-line path. This straight line must occur in both directions: straight back from your target on the backcast, and straight forward toward your target on the forward cast.
As with all fly casting practice, keeping the distance and casting stroke short allows for refinement in the various elements of the stroke. Once we become proficient at a given distance, we can add a little more line at a time to build our skills gradually and proficiently.
If we are casting a short distance, our casting arc or stroke is narrow and our pace is slow, being mindful to make abrupt stops with our rod hand to control the loop. Our rod tip moves in a straight line, controlled by the rod hand "tracking" in a straight line on the backcast. After a short pause, the caster begins gradual acceleration to the abrupt stop to allow the loop to form on the forward cast.
Take note of your presentation cast: does your fly line lay out in a nice, straight line? If not, your rod hand is not traveling in a straight line. Lay your line out on the backcast: does the line land in a straight line, or is it curved? Is the line traveling on the backcast 180 degrees opposite from the forward target?
Experienced casters will turn their bodies to a more open stance to better observe the target behind them. Just before the line straightens, the caster turns their head forward to pick up the target in front for the forward cast.
This stage comes with mastering the fundamentals before striving for record distance. Master the fundamentals, then add distance a foot or two at a time. Practice each length to become more proficient. Timing also adjusts as the casting distance increases or shortens.
Watch your casting loop: does the rod leg or bottom of the casting loop have waves, dips, or ripples? This is an indication of an uneven path or inconsistent application of power during the casting stroke. This can happen on the backcast, the forward cast, or both.
There are a number of exercises to practice tracking. Remember, the shorter your casting distance, the more upward the path of your stroke is on the backcast and pointing downward on the forward cast.
The Wall Drill: Stand next to a wall and use a piece of painter's tape to represent the straight-line path you desire. The tape should be angled in a direction appropriate for the casting distance required. Take the index finger of your casting arm and trace along the line, practicing the abrupt stop on both the backcast and forward cast. If your finger comes off the wall or applies too much pressure to the wall, your path is not entirely straight.
The Butt Section Drill: Take just the butt section of your fly rod. Watch the path of the top section: is the rod moving toward the target behind you, or is it pointing off to one side of your intended straight-line path? If your rod butt shifts by just 1 inch, the tip of a full 9-foot rod is thrown off by a significantly greater distance.
Here, we often find that our casting stroke tends to travel in a curved path behind us and off to one side or the other. In doing so, we lose the straight-line path and introduce slack, ultimately reducing our distance and accuracy.
This casting flaw becomes particularly evident as casting distance increases. We tend to drift further from our intended straight-line path to one side or the other. Many casters practice making backcasts only, using a line on the ground and a target behind them to correct this flaw. Other solutions include turning your body sideways to watch both the backcast and forward cast, as mentioned above. A soccer or football field with yard lines can be a great place to practice, as can a 100-foot measuring tape.
For now, focus on tracking while casting at shorter distances to avoid introducing flaws into your stroke.
Another way to practice a straight-line path is simply finding the large wall of a building, standing next to it, and casting parallel to the wall. At first, leave some distance between yourself and the wall to observe your results; over time, you can move closer.
Video yourself while making casting strokes from different angles. Start from the side to ensure the stroke is on the correct plane for the distance you are casting. Observe your casting arc and loop control.
Move the camera in front and behind to see if your fly line is traveling in a straight line toward the intended target. Brightly colored fly lines against a dark background can be helpful when reviewing video. Take note of waves in your fly line—these cause flaws, create slack, and waste maximum energy transfer.
Add short increments of line as you practice these skills at greater distances. Remain disciplined, remembering that smooth acceleration and the abrupt stop on both the backcast and forward cast allow the fly rod to do the work.
A straight-line path can also be disrupted by an incorrect application of power during the casting stroke. Power applied too soon or without smooth acceleration throughout the stroke will lead to tailing loops and wind knots. Proper application of power is one of the five essentials of fly casting.
Slow down, focus on the fundamentals, and watch the smoothness of your casting loops. Your casting loop will help you diagnose the root cause of any casting flaws.
Friends, remember that this is how we learn: by making mistakes, seeing them reflected in our casting loops, and diagnosing where we need to adjust. Simple adjustments, drills, and exercises facilitate steady improvement.
Slow down your casting stroke. Practice at short distances to control your loop. Remove slack by keeping your rod tip low or in the water before beginning the backcast. Slowly accelerate the stroke to the abrupt stop. Track a predetermined straight-line path appropriate for the distance of your cast. Proper timing allows the fly line to straighten out behind you before you begin accelerating on a straight-line path as close to 180 degrees opposite your backcast as possible, finishing with an abrupt stop in your casting arc for the presentation cast.
