New to the sport? Don’t sweat it. Follow these 5 steps to go from never holding a rod to your first successful outing.
We know fly fishing can look intimidating with all the specialized gear, complex knots, and unique casting styles. That’s why we partnered with Fly Fishers International (FFI) to curate a straightforward, step-by-step curriculum designed specifically for absolute beginners.
Take it one phase at a time!
Before buying anything, let's learn the language. Watch these quick introductory videos from FFI featuring Kayla and Enani to learn basic equipment needs and understand how fly rods and fly lines differ from traditional spin fishing.
Once you’ve watched the videos, we highly recommend visiting a local shop to see the gear in person and chat with an expert.
👇 Use our filterable NC Fly Fishing Directory below to find a shop near you!
You don't need to know dozens of knots to catch fish. You just need to master a few basics to get a fly securely onto your line: the loop to loop, double surgeon's knot, blood knot and the Clinch Knot
💡 Pro-Tip: Keep a piece of spare fishing line at your desk. Pause the video, look at the static diagrams in the flipbook, and practice until you can tie both confidently from memory.
Fly casting is all about timing and rhythm, not brute strength. It's best to learn the fundamentals on dry land before adding the complexity of moving water and wading.
Learn the Theory: Check out the short viedo to the left . For more in-depth videos check out the FFI "Fly Casting Education" resource page for foundational tips.
Get Hands-on Practice: Join us for our next local beginner-friendly casting clinic! We host "Class in the Grass" events at local spots where experienced instructors will help you correct early bad habits before they stick.
Check our club calendar for the next scheduled grass clinic!
Now that you can rig your rod and cast, it's time to find the fish.
Digital Tools: Use and app like TroutRoutes or the onWater FISH app (featured by FFI) to explore local waters, understand public vs. private property boundaries, and view target species.
Understanding Fish Behavior: Watch the FFI video tutorial on the right to learn the basics of how fish behave in their natural habitats. For some more indepth beginner knowledge check out the FFI resource page here
